The Unsung Heroes:Part One

Good morning beautiful humans, happy Tuesday!  Thank you for spending part of your morning with me. Welcome to Life with Lane!

We are in the month of February; which means, it’s Black History Month! February is actually one of my favorite months.  Why you ask? It’s two of my sister’s birthdays.  It is also my niece Hannah’s birthday. The superbowl takes place. The weather is extremely nice here in Orlando. Valentine’s Day and Its Black History Month. 

I absolutely love celebrating black history month. I love learning about my history and my culture. However, I don’t think enough light is shown on the unsung heroes. We constantly hear about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Nat Turner, Dredd Scott, and Rosa Parks. There’s so many others that we need to learn about.

One of my favorites is Ruby Bridges. If that name sounds familiar to you, it might be because she was the first African American child to go to a desegregated school back in 1960.

I can’t even imagine how she felt each day and the amount of courage it took. Walking to class with officers for protection and having classmates call you names and probably spit at you all because the color or your skin. I do believe she was only 6 years old. If that isn’t a hero I don’t know what is.

When I think of what she went through and how much courage she had; it makes me feel silly for the things I complain about. We’ve come so far but we still have so much ground to cover. Celebrate Black History Month with me and honor our unsung heroes. Thank you Mrs Ruby Bridges. You are indeed a hero!
