Deaf Dog Awareness Week

As usual, I found out late that last week was deaf dog awareness week. So, since I know about it, I have to write about it, even if I’m a week late. As a proud dog owner, I try to share news and tips regarding pups as much as I can.

As most of you know my pup Onyx is 14 years old. I’ve had him his entire life and it’s been a complete joy. However, he’s getting older so he’s not as hyper and energetic as he used to be. For the past few months I’ve noticed a change in him. I thought it was because he misses his brother. It could be a combination of him getting older and missing his brother.

When I did some research is when I found out last week was deaf dog awareness week. I thought Onyx was starting to lose his hearing. I have to take him to the vet but most of the signs for hearing loss, he has most of them. So, I’d like to share them with you.

1. Sleeping more than usual 2. Lethargy 3. Excessive barking 4. Aggressive behavior 5. Pawing or scratching at ears 6. Head shaking 7. Not responding when called 8. Startled easily

Onyx doesn’t bark excessively or have aggressive behavior but he has the other symptoms. I think the ones that concerns me the most is how much he sleeps, how he doesn’t hear me when I call him, and how it startles him when I walk up to him and touch him and he jumps. I imagine that’s scary for him. His happiness and health are everything to me. Have to take care of my pup.
