The Life of a Server

Good morning beautiful humans, happy Sunday! Thank you for spending part of your morning with me or evening depending on where you live in this great big world. Welcome to Life with Lane; my life through words, pictures, and food! Come on in………

Hi, my name is Arnetta, and occasionally I’m a server, I’m also a person, I have feelings (sometimes), and guess what? I absolutely matter! I’ve been a server off and on for 20 years plus. I often question my sanity, lol! Why? The life of a server is very rewarding but it’s very hard. Guest treat you as if you don’t matter. Often times, they think you made bad choices in life because you are a server, and therefore they can treat you like shit!

You’d be surprised at how often servers are mistreated and have to take a break and go in the bathroom and cry during a shift. Some people look at us as if we’re the scum of the earth and don’t think we should be tipped. We should take it up with our employer for only paying us our low hourly wage. However, they’re choosing to eat at an establishment where tipping takes place.

When you go to a restaurant to eat, having to leave a tip at the end isn’t a surprise! You knew that before you sat down. You knew that when you picked the restaurant. When you sit down with your family, friends, or even alone, it’s our job to provide you with a great experience. It is also your job to treat the server with respect. We are human.

We take care of you, your kids, your friends. We clean up your mess. We deal with your unruly children if you have them. We listen to your stories and we emphasize with your hectic days. No matter how we feel, we take in all your problems and try to make you feel better. We try to make you forget your problems and give you a great experience. That is our job.

We don’t just become servers because it’s a job. It’s because we genuinely like taking care of people. We like to serve others. Yes, the money is great but taking care of people is our true joy. Remember that next time you go to a restaurant! Servers matter!
